Fitness Fun

Written by Ann Brennan

Fitness FunThree weeks ago I decided enough was enough. It was time to start focusing on my health and fitness again. I knew it would be work. I knew it would be difficult and their would be days when I did not want to do it. What I had not remembered was how much fun it could be. I had forgotten that fitness really can be fun.

This weekend, I met a friend for a bike ride along the B&A trail. Because of the number of runners, walkers and other cyclists along the trail, it was less exercise than pure fun. But it was a great reminder of what is possible when we decide to make fitness a priority in our lives.

As I started thinking about the fun aspect of training I realized that without giving it much thought I have filled almost every weekend for the past month with some form of fitness fun.

Four weeks ago, Meg and I woke early, drove into DC and walked the Mall, the Tidal Basin and much of the downtown area of the city in order to catch the sunset over the Capitol.

The next weekend, the entire family enjoyed a beautiful hike to the top of Chimney Rock.

The following weekend, Blaise and I met the RWB Annapolis Team for a run along the B&A Trail.

And the fun continued the very next Saturday when I was able to get my 20-year-old out of bed at 5am for an early morning row along College Creek in Annapolis.

Working out is not always easy. It is not always rewarding, at least not right away. But with a little flexibility and a willing group of family and friends, it really can be fun.

What’s next on the agenda? Hmm, I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I love reading about you getting back into it. Sometimes exercise can be a grind, I’m glad you are keeping it fresh by doing different activities in different places. Brilliant!

  2. That is awesome Ann – it is great to see you out and about.

Sometimes I think it is instructive watching little kids – kids under 5 – to understand that at its best it is NOT even exercise … it is just FUN. I was out for a run when visiting Houston this week and there were a few little kids just playing around … and it really brought home the message that we need to lighten up and just go sometimes. Just walk, bike, run, and PLAY.
